Hi there, and welcome!
Congrats on taking the first step. As a licensed psychotherapist, my passion is listening and tuning into my clients' strengths, challenges, and what's holding them back from experiencing their best selves - and going from there. I work with adults of all ages, and specialize in trauma, anxiety, and depression. I hold a Masters from Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Services, completed a two-year training program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, and am EMDR trained.
My path to becoming a therapist is rooted in lived experience. Claiming joy and authenticity—as a sober, trans, kinky, non-monogamous, bisexual person—has taken time, intention, and community. I’ve moved through fear, people-pleasing, relapse, and grief, and found healing in therapy and holistic recovery spaces that reminded me who I was when I couldn’t see it myself.
I believe we’re all doing our best with the tools we have, and that therapy can offer space to build new ones—tools for feeling more, hiding less, and showing up in ways that feel true. My style is collaborative, steady, and grounded in care that doesn’t shy away from depth.
I earned my MSW from Columbia University in 2015 and began my career in home-based family therapy at NY Foundling. I later supported LGBTQIA+ youth at the LGBT Center and joined Dulcinea Pitagora’s group practice before founding my own. I continue to offer clinical supervision to social work interns at the LGBT Center.
After 11 years in NYC, I moved to the Hudson Valley to live among trees, rescue dogs, and small-town queer community. Outside of session, I’m often on a trail, on my yoga mat, or watching the birds from my porch.
I'm a dedicated, passionate therapist focused on helping people who struggle with anxiety, depression and trauma-related conditions. My experience spans a variety of settings including outpatient mental health, NYC public schools, residential care, domestic violence shelters, and substance abuse programs.
In my private practice, I take a psychodynamic approach (which means mostly talk therapy) to help clients understand and address issues that can hold them back from living a more fulfilled life.
Outside of my private practice, I have extensive experience working in school settings, and I've provided clinical supervision for social workers and consultation to medical and education staff who serve in school settings.
I received my social work degree from New York University and a BA in Psychology from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I also completed a postgraduate fellowship in psychodynamic psychotherapy through the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education, and I'm currently a doctoral candidate at Smith College School of Social Work.
I’m a warm, light-hearted therapist who believes that healing begins with feeling understood. I work with teens, adults, and couples to help them explore their emotions, strengthen relationships, and build self-awareness. I bring humor and creativity into the therapy space to make even the hard work feel approachable. My background includes experience in anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, and trauma-informed care. I’m passionate about helping clients reconnect with themselves and create lives that feel grounded, authentic, and fulfilling.
I offer compassionate, personalized support to help you through life’s challenges and build lasting emotional health. With a passion for helping individuals overcome trauma, anxiety, grief, and other emotional difficulties, I bring a unique perspective from my experience as a special education teacher and mental health professional. My training in EMDR, CBT, Trauma-Focused Therapy, Somatic Therapy and Mindfulness allows me to offer a comprehensive and personalized approach to address your needs.
I have over 30 years of experience as a licensed social worker and have been trained in most evidenced based practices over the years. I am also a trainer in therapeutic topics including stress management, mental health diagnoses such as depression/anxiety, suicide prevention and parenting challenging behaviors. I train the community and other professionals. My master's degree is in Social Work and my undergrad degree is in Psychology. I have worked with a team of behaviorists for several years and I am an expert in behavioral approaches including FBA (functional behavioral assessment), a rare combination for Social Workers! Most of my career has been on the mental health side, but over the last few years, I worked as an administrator in developmental disabilities. I can address co-occurring diagnoses such as Autism and mental health diagnoses. I believe that the client should set the pace and be involved in all aspects of treatment and that I work for you, the client.
Everyone deserves a meaningful life, though growth often requires intention and support. I’m David Coen, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and challenges related to self-worth or direction. While I support clients across many backgrounds and professions, I have particular appreciation for those in creative fields—such as writers, designers, and visual artists—who may experience heightened sensitivity, self-criticism, or pressure tied to performance and originality.
